ByLine Magazine -- Awarding $4,700 in prizes through 50 contests each year, this magazine encourages writers with how-to and motivational articles as well as publishing opportunities. www.bylinemag.com

The HyperTexts -- Michael Burch, a great poet in his own right, more or less permanently publishes the works of many other poets here. An excellent site for poets and those interested in reading poetry. www.thehypertexts.com

New Mexico Book Association -- An organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Book in general and to New Mexico authors and books in specific. www.nmbook.org

Oklahoma Writers' Federation, Inc. -- OWFI is a multi-genre writers' organization with more than 600 members, including 130 Members-at-Large and 37 affiliate groups. Members come from across the United States and around the world. OWFI also holds the oldest and most respected writers' conference in the Midwest. www.owfi.org

Panhandle Professional Writers -- Founded in 1920 and based in Amarillo, Texas, this is one of the oldest writing organizations in the nation. Their Frontiers in Writing writers' conference, held annually in June, is excellent and intimate. www.panhandleprowriter.org

Society of Southwestern Authors -- This excellent writers' organization based in Tucson, Arizona provides various services for its members as well as the large, very well-run Wrangling with Writing conference each year. www.azstarnet.com/nonprofit/ssa/
